For many people, owning a home is the American dream. And for most, their home is their greatest asset.  Yet for the majority of people who own a home, statistics show they could be under-insured by as much as 22%.  And in today’s economy, reducing insurance coverage is not a way to save money.

Stop and think, “Are you properly insured?”

Ask yourself these three questions:

1. Do I have enough insurance to rebuild my home?

Your policy needs to cover the cost of rebuilding your home at current construction cost. Quite simply, you should have enough insurance to rebuild your home in the event that it is completely destroyed.  Many policies provide additional protection to adjust your coverage as construction costs rise

2. Do I have enough insurance to replace all of my possessions?

Most homeowners insurance policies provide coverage for your personal possessions for approximately 50 to 70 percent of the amount of insurance you have on the structure of your home.  The best way to determine if you have enough personal property coverage in your policy and also an accurate detailed record of your  items is to conduct a home inventory which details everything you own and the estimated cost to replace these items if they were stolen or destroyed by a disaster.

3. Do I have enough insurance to protect my assets?

Homeowners insurance doesn’t just protect the structure or contents of your home, it also provides liability protection.  This covers against lawsuits for bodily injury or property damage that you or your family members may cause to other people.   It is important to purchase enough liability insurance to protect your assets.  If the standard liability coverage in your homeowners policy is not sufficient, you may need an excess liability or umbrella policy, which provides additional coverage over and above what is covered in your home or auto policy.

Other ways to protect your assets is to make sure you have replacement cost not only on your home but also on your personal property.  Schedule personal property – such as jewelry, guns, antiques & arts.  You can even schedule such things as hearing aids.

Also, if you are a collector or have a hobby, is your cherished collection properly insured? Most aren’t.
